Marathon marvel Gavin Sandford is set to tackle an endurance challenge of epic proportions.

The 41 year old theatre practitioner will run an astounding 45 marathons in 45 days, to raise money for both Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Beginning on 5th August, the route will take the fundraising fanatic from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Throughout the duration of the challenge, Gavin will run in fancy dress whilst pushing an oak barrel on a wheelchair that he hopes will become heavy with donations.

The route will take Gavin, who was a soldier in the British Army for five years, through most of the major cities in the UK, including London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Exeter.

He commented: “After 14 years of working as a locum operating theatre practitioner, I was inspired by the bravery and positivity of patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, so I wanted to undertake the challenge of a lifetime.

“I am expecting the challenge to be difficult, but I can’t wait to get out there. I’ve been training hard, often getting up at 3.30am to run, cycle or go to the gym before heading to work.

“I want to raise awareness and as much money as possible for these fantastic causes, and hopefully I can inspire others to fundraise too.”

All monies donated to QEHB Charity will be divided between QEHB Charity’s Military Patient Fund and Fisher House, a ‘home away from home’ for military patients and their families.

QEHB Charity’s Chief Executive, Mike Hammond, said: “Gavin’s fundraising is inspiring. I am continually surprised, amazed and humbled by the efforts our fundraisers put in, and Gavin is no exception.

“The work he is doing is remarkable and the money he raises will go a long way in helping military patients here at the QE. I’d like to express sincere gratitude from everyone at QEHB Charity, and wish him the best of luck for the challenge.”
